פרופ' בצלאל (ססיל) רות
נולד בלונדון (אנגליה) בשנת תרנ"ט (5.3.1899).
לאביו יוסף רות קיבל חינוך מסורתי, באוניברסיטת אוכספורד באנגליה. בשנת 1923 קיבל תואר B.Litt., ובשנת 1924 קיבל את התוארים M.A., Dr. Phil.. בגיל צעיר קנה לעצמו שם כחוקר תולדותיה של פירנצה.
כהיסטוריון יהודי התמסר לאחר מכן לחקר היהדות.
ב-6 ליוני 1928 נשא לאשה את איירין רוזליו לבית דויס. פירסם מאות מאמרים וכ-30 ספרים היסטוריים (ראה להלן) שתורגמו ל-10 שפות, ביניהן לעברית. המפורסם שבספריו בארץ הוא "קיצור תולדות עם ישראל" שיצא לאור באנגליה בשנת 1936.
בשנים 1939-64 הירצה באוניברסיטת אוכספורד באנגליה ב"חכמת ישראל". לשם כך החליט באותה שנה לעלות עם אשתו לארץ, ואף רכש דירה בירושלים.
בבואו לארץ הותקף על "פגיעה במסורת ישראל", זאת תוך ציטוט קטעים מספרו "קיצור תולדות עם ישראל". סינאט האוניברסיטה "בר-אילן" התכנס אז לישיבה מיוחדת, הסתייג מההאשמות נגדו והביע את אמונו הבלתי מסוייג בו כחוקר, כמורה וכאדם.
